About the facility
The Voxel Medical Diagnostic Centre in Warsaw is a facility offering a wide range of top-quality diagnostic imaging services. In addition to a range of routine CT and MRI scans, the centre carries out specialist organ-specific examinations.
The areas of particular interest in which the laboratory specialises include research into:
- mpMRI of the prostate (multiparametric MRI of the prostate in accordance with the PI-RADS guidelines)
- breast MRI
- Assessment of endometriosis using magnetic resonance imaging
We carry out tests covered by the National Health Fund (NFZ) as well as private tests.
What specialist tests do we carry out?
MRI examination of the prostate gland
We carry out this work for the following purposes:
- Staging of prostate cancer – including assessment of regional lymph nodes and any infiltration of neighbouring structures.
- Selecting the appropriate type of treatment based on the results of the mpMR scan.
- Monitoring of patients in the low-, medium- and high-risk groups.
- Assessment of the prostate in patients who have undergone treatment and in whom a rise in serum PSA levels has been observed.
- Further diagnostic investigations in patients with suspected prostate cancer, despite negative MRI-guided biopsies.
3T MRI breast scan
This is one of the three main imaging methods used in the diagnosis of breast cancer. It should be carried out in women with a family history of breast cancer or in whom gene mutations have been identified. MRI in women over the age of 40 should be carried out following a mammogram, whilst in younger women it may be performed as the first investigation. MRI enables the detection of lesions at an early stage, which may not yet be visible in other imaging tests. The sensitivity of a 3T MRI scan for invasive breast cancer is approximately 97 per cent. An MRI scan to detect focal lesions in the breasts must be performed after the administration of contrast medium. The specificity of the scan is slightly lower, but the ability to perform diffusion-weighted imaging significantly increases specificity. In women with implants, we perform an MRI scan without contrast to assess the implants, their integrity and leak-tightness; however, to assess silicone implants, special sequences must be used to evaluate the silicone.
Contrast agents used in MRI scans are safe and rarely cause allergic reactions. If your eGFR level is normal, they can be used safely. • The scan must be carried out on days 6–12 or 7–14 of the cycle, depending on the length of the cycle. If your cycles are irregular, your blood progesterone level should be measured. • If you are undergoing hormone therapy, it is advisable to stop it; the scan can then be carried out 6 weeks after stopping the medication. If you have a hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) fitted, the scan cannot be carried out – the result will not be reliable.
According to the current guidelines of the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI), the indications for breast MRI include:• inconclusive results from conventional methods (lesions detected on mammography and/or ultrasound)• histopathologically confirmed breast cancer – examination to rule out multifocal cancer or lesions in the contralateral breast• assessment of the breast in cases of metastases of unknown primary origin• assessment of treatment efficacy in patients undergoing chemotherapy• ruling out local recurrence following breast-conserving surgery• screening examinations for women whose risk of developing the disease exceeds 20 per cent (patients with genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer) and those with a family history of breast cancer• pre-operative assessment of a breast lesion• imaging of breast implants. Contrast agents used in MRI scans are safe and rarely cause allergic reactions. Provided eGFR levels are normal, they can be used safely. • The scan must be performed on days 6–12 or 7 to 14 of the cycle, depending on the length of the cycle.
If your periods are irregular, you should have your blood progesterone levels checked. • If you are taking hormone therapy, it is advisable to stop taking it; the test can then be carried out six weeks after you have stopped taking the medication. If you have a hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) fitted, the test cannot be carried out – the result will not be reliable.
Assessment of endometriosis using magnetic resonance imaging
Confirming and localising endometriosis lesions using MRI enables the cause of troublesome symptoms to be addressed.
Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue – the lining of the womb – is present outside the uterine cavity. It is estimated that around 15 per cent of women aged between 15 and 44 suffer from endometriosis – in Poland, this amounts to at least 1 million women. This condition has a negative impact on many aspects of your life, causing abdominal pain which may occur around the time of your period and ovulation, but may also be persistent. Endometriosis reduces fertility and can cause pain when using the toilet and during sexual intercourse. This condition often co-exists with bowel dysfunction and can cause constipation and bloating.
Our endometriosis specialists carry out a thorough examination of your pelvic organs to identify the cause of your symptoms.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in assessing deep-infiltrating endometriosis; it has very high specificity; it is indispensable in diagnosing endometriotic lesions in areas inaccessible to ultrasound; and it plays a major role in the assessment of ovarian tumours as well as in evaluating response to medical treatment.
Magnetic resonance imaging is a very effective imaging technique for assessing the severity of endometriosis with a view to planning further treatment, particularly the type and extent of the planned surgical procedure.
Do we carry out tests on children?
Computed Tomography (CT) – yes – from the age of 14,
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – yes – from the age of 14.
Notes:
For the scan to be carried out, the child must be able to lie still and remain motionless for the entire duration of the procedure. The scan is performed without general anaesthesia – this type of anaesthesia may only be administered by an anaesthesia team. The decision to administer a contrast agent is made by the radiologist on a case-by-case basis.
