About the facility

The University Children’s Hospital in Kraków is home to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit, which is equipped with two 1.5 Tesla MRI systems. The unit was established in 2006 and, from the very beginning, has employed radiologists with the most extensive experience in Małopolska in magnetic resonance imaging diagnostics, all of whom have been trained at European centres. Owing to its location, the centre specialises in MRI scans for children, whilst also carrying out scans for adults, as well as prenatal and perinatal scans. The range of procedures on offer covers MRI of the nervous, musculoskeletal, digestive and genitourinary systems. At the same time, it is a leading centre in the development of new MRI techniques – it was here that the first protocols in Kraków and the Małopolska region were developed for modern intestinal examinations (MRI enterography), whole-body imaging (whole-body MRI), and the diagnosis of perianal fistulas and rectal cancer.

Pracownia dysponuje wysokopolowymi aparatami MR firmy GE, które oprócz nowych rozwiązań diagnostycznych umożliwiają zwiększenie komfortu pacjenta podczas badania – duża średnica otworu i technologia ograniczenia emisji hałasu pomagają w eliminowaniu dyskomfortu i niepokoju pacjenta.

18 years’ experience in paediatric diagnostics

What tests do we carry out?

In addition to a full range of diagnostic imaging services covering the nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and abdominal and pelvic conditions, we also carry out highly specialised examinations.

Nasza pracownia ma największe w Małopolsce doświadczenie w diagnostyce dzieci i wcześniaków.

For the past 18 years, we have been collaborating with leading clinical research centres in the fields of: multiple sclerosis imaging, Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and liver elastography.

List of highly specialised MRI scans

  • MR enterography (MR of the intestines)
  • Foetal MR
  • MRI of the mammary glands
  • MR spectroscopy
  • whole body MR
  • MR of perianal fistulas
  • Pelvic MRI as part of a protocol for the detection of reproductive organ cancers
  • Pelvic MRI as part of the protocol for the assessment of rectal cancer

Do we carry out tests on children?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – yes – from the age of 6.

Notes:
For the scan to be carried out, the child must be able to lie still and remain motionless for the entire duration of the procedure. The scan is performed without general anaesthesia – this type of anaesthesia may only be administered by an anaesthesia team. The decision to administer a contrast agent is made by the radiologist on a case-by-case basis.
